The Great Kererū Count 2021 is coming

  • by

The Great Kererū Count is NZ’s only large-scale community science project dedicated to our precious kererū.

This is the 8th year of the Great Kererū Count. Come together for 10 full days of fun from the 17th to 26th September 2021 and let’s make this the biggest Great Kererū Count yet!

Whether you love their classic white singlets, their whooping wing-beats, or their awesome aerial acrobatics, kererū are especially unique to us. As well as being real characters of our bush, they are also the gardeners of the sky – spreading seeds of our forest giants such as tawa, hīnau and miro. The Great Kererū Count is about New Zealand coming together to create a statistically significant data set on kererū so we can understand what we can do to help them thrive.

Over the past 7 years, tens of thousands of people have made observations about the presence or absence of kererū, their location and their behaviour. Over those past 7 years, New Zealand community scientists have contributed to a whopping total of 52,034 observations and 119,910 kererū counted.

So make sure you don’t miss out on this year’s final count down and help us complete the only national data set on kererū. This data will be open source and available to all researchers.
